Scots acting superstar Ewan McGregor and his family love their pet dog so much that they have talked about getting it cloned when it dies.

The Star Wars and Trainspotting star’s daughter Esther revealed that the family have had lengthy discussions about whether they should get their pet pooch Sid genetically cloned.

The process of cloning in the US costs around $50,000 (£39,555) and came almost two decades after Scots scientists at the Roslin Institute in Midlothian managed to clone Dolly The Sheep.

Sid has always been a cherished family member and Ewan - who starred in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones - has admitted in interviews before that he often FaceTimes the pup when he’s away from home.

Esther, speaking in an online podcast, said: “I’ve already had many debates about this with my family because we have talked about cloning our dog.

“He is the best dog ever and they have managed to do that and they (my family) were very interested. I came to this conclusion personally - I truly believe that every person is who they are because of what has happened through their lives and what they have had to go through even if it’s the mere breakage of an ankle.”

Bedland Terrier Sid, who came from a rescue centre in Santa Monica, was run over in a near fatal accident in 2017 just days after Ewan announced his split with his wife and mother to his children Eve Mavrakis.

He has been even more cherished by the family ever since and his brush with death appeared to have spurred the chat about cloning.

Esther added: “Every little thing adds up to who you are so I think that cloning and starting over, that they will turn out to be completely different people. I know this isn’t my loved one or whatever but this is even more important because he’s my dog and so don’t question that.

“My dog was a rescue dog and also I don’t know what happened to him before. What if that changed how he is growing up in a nice house and before was on the street? He might not be the cute dog we now lovingly know.”

The process of cloning is currently available in Hollywood and celebrities including Barbra Streisand have had it done.

Cells were taken from the mouth and stomach of her 14-year-old Coton de Tulear dog, Samantha, to create two new dogs. Barbra has since however admitted that her two cloned dogs are unexpectedly different from the original and that she’s waiting for them to get older to see if they take in the traits of the original.
