Gonçalo Ramos Facts

  • Gonçalo’s youth career started in 2009 when, as an 8-year-old, he joined S.C. Olhanense, a Portuguese sports club based in his hometown of Olhão. He moved to the youth team of a club in Loulé, a city & municipality in the region of Algarve, district of Faro, Portugal, in 2011.
  • In 2013, he was recruited by the youth system of S.L. Benfica, a professional soccer club based in Lisbon that is part of the ‘Big Three’ soccer clubs in Portugal – the others being Sporting CP and FC Porto. He stayed in that system until 2019 when his senior career started by turning out for S.L. Benfica B, the reserve team of S.L. Benfica.
  • In July 2020, on his first-team debut for the senior team of S.L. Benfica, Gonçalo scored a brace (2 goals in a match) in just 8 minutes – after coming on as an 85th-minute substitute in a 4-0 away win over C.D. Aves in a Primeira Liga (the top tier of the Portuguese soccer league system) match.
  • In the 2019-20 season of the UEFA Youth League (an annual competition that is contested by the youth teams of the clubs competing in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League (the most prestigious club competition in European soccer) along with the domestic youth champions of the best-ranked national associations in Europe), he finished as the joint-top scorer in the tournament with 8 goals to his name.
  • Gonçalo’s performance was instrumental in helping the youth team of S.L. Benfica reach the final of this competition. He also scored both of his team’s goals in a 2-3 defeat in the final at the hands of the youth team of Spanish behemoth Real Madrid CF.
  • In April 2022, during the quarter-final stage of the 2021-22 season of the UEFA Champions League, he became the 2nd youngest player (aged 20 years and 297 days) to score a goal for S.L. Benfica in the knock-out phase of the competition. It was also his first goal ever in the competition.
  • In November 2022, on his senior national debut for Portugal, Gonçalo scored the 3rd goal and assisted the 4th in a 4-0 win over Nigeria in a friendly match.
  • In December 2022, in just his 4th senior-level international match for Portugal, in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the 2022 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, against Switzerland, he scored a hat-trick and provided an assist in a massive 6-1 win. The win meant that Portugal had reached the quarter-final stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2006.
  • This made Gonçalo the first player to have scored a hat-trick in a knock-out stage match of the FIFA World Cup since Tomáš Skuhravý of Czechoslovakia did so in a 4-1 win over Costa Rica in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the 1990 edition of the tournament.
  • He also became the first player to have scored a hat-trick in his first start in a FIFA World Cup match since legendary German striker Miroslav Klose did so in an 8-0 win over Saudi Arabia in his team’s opening group stage match of the 2002 edition of the tournament.
