Jorik Hendrickx Facts
He and his younger sister Loena used to train at an ice rink in their hometown of Turnhout. However, after the facility was shut down, the duo was forced to train at a temporary rink for quite a while.
In November 2012, he had to withdraw midway from the Trophée Éric Bompard after sustaining an injury in an off-ice warm-up. He had fractured his ankle, tearing ligaments from his fibula. The injury had sidelined him until January 2013.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics, he and Loena were the only siblings participating in the singles skating events. This was the longest distance he had ever traveled for competition and the first time that his mother had attended a major international event to watch him perform.
He had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the Belgian Figure Skating Championships, in the senior tier, thrice (2009–10, 2015–16, 2016–17), and the ‘Silver’ medal twice (2010–11, 2011–12).
At the junior tier, he had won the ‘Gold’ Medal at the Belgian Figure Skating Championships (2008-09) and the International Cup of Nice (2009); the ‘Silver’ medal at the Belgian Figure Skating Championships (2007-08) and the NRW Trophy (2009); and the ‘Bronze’ medal at the International Challenge Cup (2009) and the NRW Trophy (2008).
After his participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics, he had skipped the 2018–19 figure skating season and had announced his retirement from the sport in August 2019.
In early 2017, to plan for his future after retiring from the sport, he had started an internship with the swimwear accessories manufacturer Speedo, working on a research project. He had also joined All Sport Benelux NV, a company that distributes Speedo products to retailers in Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and the Netherlands. There, his work was focused on researching the growth of e-commerce in Belgium.
His 4th place finish at the 2017 European Figure Skating Championships was the best result by a Belgian skater at the tournament since 2009.
