Rachel Mcadams Biography

Mcadams was born on November 17, 1978, in London, Ontario, Canada, to a nurse mother, Sandra, and a truck driver father, Lance McAdams. She grew up in St. Thomas in a Protestant household as the eldest of three children. Her sister Kayleen is a makeup artist, and her brother Daniel is a personal trainer. Rachel is of Scottish, English, Irish, and Welsh descent, and her maternal fifth great-grandfather was a Loyalist Ranger during the American Revolution.

Rachel’s journey to stardom began on the ice rink. She started figure skating when she was four years old and competed until she was 18, winning several regional awards. Mcadams once turned down an opportunity to move to Toronto for pair skating training when she was nine. She has credited figure skating with teaching her to be in tune with her body, which has helped her in her acting career.

Mcadams’s interest in performing started when she was seven, and she attended Disney and Shakespeare summer camps as a child. She participated in Original Kids Theatre Company productions from the age of 12 and directed children’s theatre productions in her late teens. Rachel was involved in school stage productions, winning a performance award at the Sears Ontario Drama Festival. She was inspired by her English and drama teachers in grades 11 and 12, who encouraged her to pursue a professional acting career.

Rachel later earned a Genie Award nomination in Canada for her role in the drama Perfect Pie.

Her big break came in 2004 when she starred in the comedy film Mean Girls, based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes. She played Regina George, the mean high school queen bee, and modelled her character on Alec Baldwin’s performance in Glengarry Glen Ross. The film was a commercial and critical success, grossing $129 million worldwide, and earned Rachel two MTV Movie Awards. Tina Fey, who co-starred in the film and wrote the screenplay, credited Rachel with teaching her how to act in front of a camera rather than an audience.

Rachel’s career has only gone up since then, with notable roles in The Notebook, The Time Traveler’s Wife, and Spotlight, among others. She co-starred with Jason Bateman in the comedy Game Night in 2018, which reminded audiences of her talent and appeal as a comic actress. She performed some of her own stunt driving in the film’s getaway scene. Later that year, she starred opposite Rachel Weisz in Sebastián Lelio’s romantic drama Disobedience, based on Naomi Alderman’s novel, which showcased her range as an actress.

Rachel is also known for her activism and philanthropy. She is an ambassador for the non-profit organization “Stand Up to Cancer” and has supported various charities and causes over the years, including the Alzheimer Society of Canada, the United Nations World Food Programme, and the Canadian charity “The Shoebox Project for Shelters,” which provides gifts to women and children living in shelters.
